Basic Principles of Landscape Design
University of Florida IFAS Extension
Why this oneThe clearest free treatment of the principles as a working system rather than a glossary. Gail Hansen and Keighly Graves take unity, balance, proportion, transition, rhythm, focalisation, repetition and order one at a time and explain what each does to the viewer, with rules you can actually apply — group in odd numbers of three, five or seven; one or two focal points work but too many create chaos; put fine textures at the outer perimeter, medium in the middle and coarse closest to the viewer to make a space feel larger. Complete on one page, no paywall, written for homeowners rather than students.
Change this for PerthThe plant examples are Florida's and the colour advice assumes soft, humid light. Perth summer light is far harsher — it bleaches colour and exaggerates contrast — so weight the form, texture and shadow guidance much more heavily than the colour guidance.

Landscape Design: Ten Important Things to Consider
University of Florida IFAS Extension
Why this oneThe companion piece, and the more useful one if your problem is that a garden feels wrong rather than that you cannot name the principle. It separates form themes from style themes, explains massing and layering so that each plant mass sits in front of, behind or beside another, and makes the case for outdoor rooms — that people prefer spaces at human scale that feel sheltered. Its most quotable rule for a renovation is the spacing one: set plants so that at maturity they are barely touching their neighbours and read as one growing mass.
Change this for PerthUS publication — ignore the plant names and the regional style examples. The mass-planting rule needs adjusting here: many WA natives are open and see-through, so a group that would read as a solid mass in a humid climate needs more plants and tighter repetition to read as a mass at all in Perth.

Extension Gardener Handbook, Chapter 19: Landscape Design
NC State Extension
Why this oneA complete university textbook chapter, free, that puts the principles inside a design process rather than listing them: base plan, site survey, activity list, use areas, design, installation. It covers scale, balance, unity, perspective, rhythm and accent alongside the spatial ideas that decide whether a garden works — the horizontal, vertical and overhead planes, garden rooms, transitional spaces, pattern language and garden geometry. It is the closest free equivalent to what a design student is taught, and it hands you real dimensions instead of adjectives.
Change this for PerthNorth Carolina, in imperial units. Convert as you read: the 4.5 ft minimum front path is about 1.4 m, secondary paths of 2.5 to 3 ft are 750 to 900 mm. Ignore the plant lists, the rain garden sizing and anything about frost — Perth sand, a shallow watertable in parts of the coastal plain and the winter sprinkler ban make those numbers wrong here.

Residential Design Codes Volume 1 (April 2026)
Western Australian Planning Commission / Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage
Why this oneIn WA, proportion is a legal question before it is an aesthetic one, and this is the document that sets the floor. For a single house on land coded R40 or below, clause 5.3.1 sets the minimum outdoor living area from Table B and requires a minimum length and width of 4 m, sited behind the street setback, directly accessible from the primary living space, with at least two-thirds of the required area uncovered. Clause 5.3.2 requires at least one tree in a 2 m by 2 m planting area free of paving and roof cover, and limits the street setback area to no more than 50 per cent impervious surface. Read those two clauses and Table B before you draw anything.
Change this for PerthThe current version is dated April 2026 and took effect on 10 April 2026, when the special transitional arrangements for Part C ceased. Table B columns 3 to 5 were deleted and replaced by Part D Table D in the April 2024 amendment, so use Table D for site area. Your local planning scheme, a local planning policy or a local development plan can vary any of this — confirm with your council.

Low maintenance garden design for Perth
Water Corporation
Why this oneFour complete Perth garden designs — native, coastal, Mediterranean and cottage — each a free downloadable PDF with a bird's-eye view, a front façade view, a close-up perspective and a shopping list giving both common and botanical names. They are the cheapest possible practice material for the tests in this lesson: count the materials, trace the repetition, find the focal point, on drawings made for this climate. Being official and free, they also dodge the problem that makes overseas design examples close to useless here, which is the plant list.

Why this oneA real, documented Perth garden on a real Hilton block, with a downloadable landscape features plan. Two dwellings, north-facing garden layouts, a productive area, a 25 m fruit tree run along the southern boundary, shade structures, pergolas, decking, a dampland habitat and children's play space, all resolved on a small suburban footprint. Working out how one designer fitted that many functions into that little space will teach you more about proportion than any list of principles.

How to plan a border
Royal Horticultural Society
Why this oneThe only free page on this list that gives you a planting density you can count on a drawing: roughly five herbaceous perennials, or three small shrubs, or one large shrub per square metre, with plants positioned in odd-numbered groups so a bed does not read as bitty. That turns repetition from a word into an arithmetic check you can run on a plan before you price a single pot.
Change this for PerthUK densities, on UK soil, under UK rainfall, using a UK palette. The odd-number grouping rule travels; the per-square-metre count does not, because a Perth palette of banksias, westringias, grasses and succulents has completely different mature spreads. Residential Design Codes Volume 1 (version effective 10 April 2026)
Western Australian Planning Commission
Why this oneThis is the document your council assesses a patio, a shed or a repaved front garden against, and four of its clauses set hard limits on how you may zone a block. Read clause 5.3.1 and Table B (outdoor living area), 5.3.2 (one tree with a 2 m by 2 m planting area, and no more than 50 per cent of the street setback area impervious), 5.4.3 (outbuilding size and height) and 5.4.4 (clothes drying and bin areas screened from the street). Always take it from this page rather than a saved copy — the version here took effect on 10 April 2026 and supersedes the March 2024 edition still circulating on council websites.
Change this for PerthDeemed-to-comply figures are the standards a council can approve over the counter, not absolute prohibitions. Failing one does not make the work illegal; it means your application is assessed against the design principles instead, which costs time and gives the decision-maker discretion. R-Codes Volume 1 Explanatory Guidelines
Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage
Why this oneThe R-Codes tell you the number; this tells you what the number is for, which is what you need when you are arguing a case rather than filling a form. Section 6.1 explains that up to one-third of the outdoor living area may be roofed precisely because Perth needs summer shade, and that the unroofed remainder exists to keep natural light reaching the primary living space. Section 4.3 confirms that open space includes ground-level areas covered for shade but not used as part of the dwelling, and lists clothes drying and storage of household items as legitimate functions of open space.
Change this for PerthThis is the March 2024 edition of the guidelines sitting alongside a 10 April 2026 edition of the Codes themselves. Where the two disagree on a figure, the Codes win — use the guidelines for intent, not for numbers.

Landscape Design (Extension Gardener Handbook, chapter 19)
NC State Extension
Why this oneThe clearest free explanation of the functional diagram as a step in a sequence rather than a doodle. It defines the bubble diagram as a way of determining the best location for each required activity and how much space that activity needs, then studying circulation between them, and it sets out the public / private / service zone split that most amateurs skip entirely. Its point that an adequate amount of space is the thing that makes a wish list buildable is the whole argument of this lesson.
Change this for PerthNorth Carolina. Ignore every plant, every climate reference and the seasonal advice. The process, the zone framework and the outdoor-room language transfer directly; the material does not. FOGO three-bin service
City of Swan
Why this oneA clear statement of what a Perth household bin zone now has to hold: a lime-green-lid FOGO bin collected weekly, plus a red-lid general waste bin and a yellow-lid recycling bin collected on alternate fortnights, with size choices of 140 or 240 litres for the first two and 240 or 360 litres for recycling. It also publishes a staged rollout calendar running through to 2028, which is the reason to design for three bins even if your suburb still has two.

You need real millimetres to size a bin store, and this is the source rather than a guess. Hills Hoist 6 line rotary clothesline — specifications
Hills
Why this oneThe published figures that decide whether a rotary line fits: a 3.2 m head diameter, 38 m of drying line, and a stated 0.5 m clearance required on each side. That means a clear circle of roughly 4.2 m and nothing overhanging it — no eaves, no shrub, no washing line rubbing on a fence. Most zoning diagrams draw the clothesline too small, and this is the number that stops that.
Change this for PerthIf a 4.2 m circle does not exist on your block, the answer is a fold-down or wall-mounted line — measure the specific model you intend to buy rather than assuming. A rotary line needs a concreted ground socket, so it is a decision you make before paving, not after.

Why this oneFour clauses in this document decide how you are allowed to move through and look out of your block, and all four are short. Clause 5.2.5 sets the driveway sight-line truncation, 5.3.5 sets driveway width and position, 5.4.1 sets the visual privacy cone of vision and the setbacks that go with it, and Part C clause 3.10 does the same job for the denser development Part C covers — single houses coded R50 and above, grouped dwellings coded R30 and above, and multiple dwellings coded R30 to R60. ABCB Livable Housing Design Standard 2022
Australian Building Codes Board
Why this oneThe best free source of hard millimetres for a garden path, because Part 1 defines a step-free access path in numbers you can build to: no steps, maximum gradient 1:14 in the direction of travel, crossfall no more than 1:40, minimum width 1,000 mm, gates with a clear opening of at least 820 mm, landings at least 1,200 mm long at each end of a ramp, and one step ramp allowed at up to 190 mm high, 1:10 and 1,900 mm long. Part 1.2 also gives the unobstructed car space, 3,200 mm by 5,400 mm. Nothing else free and Australian publishes this level of detail.
Change this for PerthThese provisions are not law in Western Australia. Crossover guidelines: Residential and Non-Residential
City of Stirling
Why this oneOne Perth council's crossover rules written out in full, and the clearest free example of what every council will want. Single residential crossovers 3.0 to 6.0 m wide excluding splays, a secondary crossover 3.0 m, no closer than 0.5 m to the adjoining property boundary, constructed at right angles to the kerb, no crossover inside the lot truncation at an intersection, asphalt not permitted for residential work, and a permit required before you start — with the blunt warning that an unpermitted crossover may have to come out. It also sets the crossover 30 mm above the road at the gutter and 125 to 150 mm above it at 2,050 mm in, which is the geometry that stops street stormwater running onto your block.

Residential bin collections — how to present your bins
City of Stirling
Why this oneThe reason a bin zone is a dimensioned design problem rather than an afterthought. The City requires bins on the verge by 6.00am on service day, 500 mm apart, 1 m clear of obstacles such as cars, trees and posts, and 1 m clear of overhead powerlines, with a diagram showing the spacing. Three bins presented to that rule need close to 2.8 m of unobstructed verge, which is the number that kills a front-garden design with a new tree or a raised bed in the wrong place.
Change this for PerthCity of Stirling rules. Spacing, presentation times and the number of bins vary between Perth councils, and most are still rolling out the third FOGO bin — check your own council's page and design for three bins regardless.

Safer places by design: CPTED planning guidelines
Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage
Why this oneWA's current crime prevention through environmental design guidance, and the state's own argument for why you should not screen your front garden solid. Principle 1 covers passive surveillance and clear sightlines, and the residential street scenario in section 4.2 states the rule plainly: low shrubs and high canopy trees support clear sightlines, visually permeable fencing and low planting let ground-floor rooms see the street, and street lighting should be kept clear of tree canopies. It also names what to avoid — concealment spots, entrapment points, planting that shields light fittings.

Shading
Your Home, Australian Government
Why this oneThe single best free document on shading in Australia, and the one that gives you numbers instead of adjectives. It states that direct sun delivers roughly the heat of a one-bar radiator per square metre and that effective shading blocks up to 90% of it, gives the 45% eave rule for north-facing openings, and explains why east and west are the hard ones — low sun angles that fixed overhead shading cannot intercept. Its orientation table recommends deep verandas or pergolas with deciduous vines for east and west, which is the move this lesson builds on.

Thermal mass
Your Home, Australian Government
Why this oneExplains the rule that decides whether limestone, concrete and rendered walls are an asset or a liability in your garden: thermal mass suits climates with a large day-to-night temperature swing, with high-mass construction desirable above a 10 °C diurnal range. It also states the summer condition plainly — mass must be shaded from summer sun and exposed to night air, or it simply stores the afternoon and radiates it back at you all evening.
Change this for PerthThe article is about building fabric. Applied to a garden, the same physics governs limestone retaining, rendered walls, concrete seats and paving slabs — the difference is that garden mass is almost never insulated, so shading it is your only control.

School Microclimates
Pfautsch et al., Western Sydney University and Macquarie University
Why this oneThe rare Australian study that put infrared cameras on ordinary ground surfaces over a full summer and published the numbers. Sunlit artificial grass averaged 61 °C, black asphalt 57 °C when the air was 34 °C, bare soil 56 °C with spot readings to 64 °C, while concrete was the coolest hard surface at 42–43 °C and an irrigated lawn measured 38 °C on an extreme-heat day. Shading dropped asphalt by nearly 25 °C and artificial grass to 35 °C. It also notes that surfaces above 60 °C can burn skin in about five seconds under ISO 13732.
Change this for PerthMeasured at one Western Sydney school over the 2019–20 summer, so the tree species, water-use figures and soil behaviour do not transfer to Perth sand. Why this oneSearch by suburb and filter by growth habit to get trees that will actually hold their canopy through a Perth February without a watering schedule you cannot legally run. Why this oneA short government summary of material selection for heat — reflective and low-absorptance surfaces, and permeable materials that allow evaporation. It quantifies the roof case (cool roofing reducing average surface temperature by around 4 to 8 °C, and roughly 100 fewer hours a summer above 26 °C indoors) and carries a case study of a development where artificial turf is banned outright because it absorbs sunlight and creates very high surface temperatures.
Change this for PerthNSW policy material aimed at Western Sydney, so ignore the planning-control framing. Why this oneNames cutting and laying pavers and surfacing, and brick, concrete or stone cutting, as processes that generate respirable crystalline silica, and sets out the control hierarchy you are expected to use: wet work methods such as wet cutting and water sprays, local extraction ventilation fixed or on-tool, and appropriate respiratory protection. Read it before you choose a material that has to be cut on site, because limestone, concrete pavers, granite and liquid limestone all do.
Change this for PerthWritten for a person conducting a business or undertaking. A homeowner cutting their own pavers is not bound by the same duties, but the dust is identical and silicosis is irreversible — the controls are the point, not the paperwork.

Pavers — current WA retail prices
Midland Brick
Why this oneOne of the few WA manufacturers that publishes live retail prices on its product pages instead of hiding behind an enquiry form, which makes it a usable benchmark for a palette. Checked on 2 August 2026 it listed Easilock 80 Granite at $73.66 per square metre, Dekopave 80 Granite at $79.08, Coachlock 80 Stonewash at $89.97 and Flagstone 80 Stonewash at $106.56 per square metre. Its limestone block pages publish per-pallet prices the same way.
Change this for PerthSupply only, ex-yard, and it is one supplier's list price — not a delivered rate and not an installed rate. Prices move; treat these as a benchmark to quote against, and always confirm the current figure and whether GST and delivery are included before you budget from it.

HB 195-2002 The Australian Earth Building Handbook
Standards Australia
Why this oneThe reference document for rammed earth and mud brick in this country, covering material selection and preparation, construction techniques and detailing, durability and strength, standard footing solutions and the test procedures for stabilised earth. If you are seriously considering a rammed earth wall in the garden, this is what your builder and any engineer will be working from, and reading it is how you understand why the quote looks like a structure rather than a wall.
Change this for PerthPublished in 2002 and not cheap for a single garden wall. If you only need to understand the material and find someone who builds it, start with the Earth Building Association of Australia instead and leave the handbook to your builder.

Earth Building Association of Australia
Earth Building Association of Australia
Why this oneThe national body for unfired earth construction, formed in 1990, with a practitioners directory, a publications list including 'Building with Earth Bricks and Rammed Earth in Australia', recorded 'Earth Matters' webinars and a research page. It is the free way in to a material that has almost no honest consumer information online, and the directory is how you find someone who has actually built one rather than a landscaper willing to try.
Change this for PerthNational rather than WA-specific. Western Australia has an unusually deep stabilised rammed earth trade, so filter the directory by state and expect the local practitioners to be the most experienced in the country.

Waterwise Plants
Water Corporation
Why this oneThe only plant database written for WA that carries a water rating you can design against. Search by suburb or by plant name, then filter by origin (WA Native, Australian Native, Exotic), garden type (Coastal, Container, Cottage, Courtyard, Edible, Mediterranean, Native, Tropical, Verge), growth habit and Water Rating (Minimum, Little or Medium maintenance). It also states the standard the whole list is built on: for Perth and the South West, a waterwise plant is one that only needs watering once a week during summer, or on your rostered watering days.
Change this for PerthThe water rating describes an established plant. Everything on the list still needs a full establishment season at a higher frequency, so a bed of "minimum maintenance" plants is a high-water zone for its first summer and a low-water zone after that. The availability filter matters too — plenty of listed species are flagged as limited or no availability in Perth nurseries.

Garden designs for Perth and the South West
Water Corporation
Why this oneFour free downloadable garden design plans — Native, Coastal, Mediterranean and Cottage — each with perspective views, a shopping list and a plant schedule giving common and botanical names. The value here is not the layouts, which are generic, but the four coherent plant palettes: each one is a worked example of a set of species that genuinely belong in the same hydrozone, which is much harder to assemble yourself than it looks.
Change this for PerthThese are style palettes, not water ratings. Cross-check each species in the Waterwise Plants directory before you assign it to a zone, and do not assume a whole palette lands in one hydrozone — the Mediterranean and Cottage lists in particular mix water needs.

Why you need to seasonally adjust your irrigation
Water Corporation
Why this onePublishes the actual monthly seasonal-adjust percentages for Perth and the South West — January and February 100%, March 80%, April 60%, October 60%, November 80%, December 90%, with May to August covered by manual watering and the Sprinkler Switch-off. It explains that seasonal adjustment is a percentage applied to your run time, so a 10 minute summer station becomes 8 minutes at 80%. This is the number that proves why hydrozones must be clean: one global percentage can only be correct if every station is already right relative to the others.

How long should I run my sprinklers for
Water Corporation
Why this oneThe conversion table that turns a hydrozone plan into minutes, and therefore into a yes or no on whether your design fits the legal watering window. Pop-up and fixed spray apply 35 to 45 mm per hour and need 13 to 16 minutes for 10 mm; rotary applies 10 to 15 mm per hour and needs 40 to 60 minutes; gear drive rotary 30 to 40 minutes; dripline 15 to 20 mm per hour and 30 to 40 minutes; micro spray 13 to 16 minutes. Use it at concept stage to count how many stations your zone plan implies before you commit to the layout.
Change this for PerthThe stated target of 10 mm per watering day is a Perth default for sandy soil, not a per-plant requirement. Hydrozoning exists precisely so different zones get different depths and different frequencies — treat 10 mm as the lawn number and work up or down from it.

Landscaping FAQs for Josh's House
Josh Byrne & Associates / Curtin University
Why this oneThe clearest WA definition of the technique, from a monitored demonstration house in Hilton: hydrozoning is "grouping plants based on their common water and management requirements" so that "various hydrozones can be serviced by different irrigation stations, and with different water sources". It then lists the seven zones actually built on one suburban block — hardy perennials on greywater dripline, turf on bore rotaries, vegetables, fruit trees, advanced trees on spray stakes, a propagation area, and natives irrigated for establishment only. It also states the design rule most people miss, that irrigated planting is deliberately balanced with decking, gravel and mulch paths that need no water at all.
Change this for PerthJosh's House has a bore and a greywater system, which most renovations do not. Read the zone list as a structure to copy, not a specification — the same seven zones on scheme water alone would be a very different scheduling problem.

Josh's House plans (landscape and irrigation drawings)
Josh Byrne & Associates / Curtin University
Why this oneFree download of a complete, built Perth landscape package: the Landscape Concept, the Landscape Design As Constructed with the full plant palette, the Irrigation Design, and the Integrated Water System Design showing hydrozoning alongside greywater, wastewater and bore water. Very few Australian residential projects publish their drawings at all, and seeing how one designer split a small Fremantle-area block into zones is worth more than any amount of theory.
Change this for PerthThe drawings are scanned images rather than searchable text, so you have to read them on screen and zoom. They are also a new-build on a subdivided lot with a bore and greywater, so the water sources will not match a typical renovation.

Water-Efficient Landscaping Tips
US Environmental Protection Agency (WaterSense)
Why this oneA regulator's plain statement of the principle, useful when you want the reasoning rather than a WA rule: grouping vegetation with similar watering needs into hydrozones "reduces water use and protects the plants from both underwatering and overwatering by allowing you to water to each zone's specific needs", and "turf areas and shrub areas should always be separated into different hydrozones because of their differing water needs". That second sentence is the single most broken rule on Perth blocks.
Change this for PerthAmerican, so convert the units and ignore the scheduling. Its mulch recommendation of three to four inches is 75 to 100 mm; Water Corporation's Perth figure is 5 to 10 cm of coarse mulch. It also assumes you can water on any day you like, which you cannot here — Perth's two-day roster makes the hydrozone discipline it describes far more important, not less.

Growing Western Australian plants
Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority (Kings Park)
Why this oneSpecies-by-species growing guides written by the horticulturists who keep these plants alive in Kings Park, covering aspect, soil, planting season, watering method, fertiliser and pruning. For the low and unirrigated zones this is the check on whether a plant you like will actually tolerate the regime you are proposing — the kangaroo paw guide, for example, specifies planting in autumn and winter in full sun or dappled shade and watering at the base rather than over the leaves to prevent fungal disease.
Change this for PerthThe guides are short and do not give a numeric water rating, so they complement the Water Corporation directory rather than replacing it. Coverage is limited to species Kings Park grows and promotes, which skews to WA natives and to Kings Park's own cultivars.

Josh's House plans
Josh Byrne & Associates / Curtin University
Why this oneThe only openly published, professionally drawn landscape documentation for a real Perth block that this course has found. The page offers a Landscape Concept PDF showing the key features of the garden at overview level, and a separate Landscape Design PDF carrying the plant palette — which is exactly the split this lesson asks you to make between concept and documentation. Open the Landscape Concept and study how much is shown, how little is labelled, and where the title block, scale and north point sit.
Change this for PerthIt is a demonstration project on a small Fremantle-area lot, so the block shape and the water systems are not typical. Copy the sheet structure and the level of resolution, not the content.

Extension Gardener Handbook, Chapter 19: Landscape Design
NC State Extension
Why this oneThe clearest free step-by-step on the actual drawing process: build a base map to scale with property lines, utilities, existing features, windows and doors, add a north arrow, then work in tracing paper overlays for site analysis, use areas and bubble diagrams before committing to a final plan. It also covers plant symbols and how to choose a drawing scale. Written for homeowners, illustrated, and free of any product to sell.
Change this for PerthAmerican and imperial — it recommends scales like 1 inch equals 10 feet. Ignore that and use the metric scales in this lesson (1:50, 1:100, 1:200). The plant material, hardiness zones and turf advice do not apply on the Swan Coastal Plain; the drawing method does.

Landgate Map Viewer Plus
Landgate
Why this oneThe official WA source for property and administrative boundaries, cadastral data, geodetic marks and aerial imagery, viewable free in a browser. Use it to sanity-check the lot shape and orientation on your base plan and to see your block in its street context before you draw. It is the state's own cadastre, not a third-party approximation of it.
Change this for PerthThe on-screen cadastre is a data layer, not a survey. Do not scale a boundary position off it, and do not pay for an imagery extract for a garden concept — the free view is enough for context, and your dimensions must come from your own measure-up.

Cadastral surveying in Western Australia
Landgate
Why this oneThe page that tells you where your own tape and your own drawing have to stop. Landgate states that any person carrying out the practice of land surveying must be registered with, and hold a current Practising Certificate issued by, the Land Surveyors Licensing Board of Western Australia under the Licensed Surveyors Act 1909. Read it before you draw anything hard up against a boundary, because a wall in the wrong place is the single most expensive line you can put on a concept plan.

QCAD Community Edition
QCAD.org
Why this oneThe best free route to a drawing that is genuinely to scale, with real dimension entities, layers and printing at a stated scale — which is what separates a plan from a picture. The page lists 3.32.9 as the current release and confirms the Community Edition is released under GPLv3, and explains the slightly awkward path to the free version: download the trial for your platform, then remove the QCAD Professional add-on from the Trial widget, or compile from source. Runs on Windows, macOS (including Apple Silicon) and Linux.

Inkscape
Inkscape Project
Why this oneA mature free vector drawing program — version 1.4.4, released 6 May 2026, for Linux, Windows and macOS, with the source released under the GNU General Public License v2 or later. It is the right free tool if you want a concept plan that looks designed rather than drafted: proper line weights, transparent fills for planting masses, and clean text. Set the document to A3 in millimetres and draw at 1:100 by treating every 10 mm as a metre.
Change this for PerthInkscape is a graphics program, not CAD. It has no dimension entities and will happily let you draw something that is not to scale, so build a scale bar into the sheet early and check it against a known distance before you trust anything you have drawn.

QGIS
QGIS.org
Why this oneFree and open-source GIS under the GNU General Public License, for Windows, macOS and Linux. The current release is 4.2.0 'Belém do Pará' (3 July 2026) with 3.44.12 as the long-term release, which is the one to install if you are new. Worth the effort only if you want your plan sitting on real aerial imagery and real cadastre — its print layout can output a PDF at a fixed, stated map scale, which most drawing apps cannot.
Change this for PerthHeavy machinery for a suburban block, and it will not draw a garden for you. Nothing you trace off aerial imagery in QGIS is a set-out dimension; the imagery is orthorectified to a tolerance, not to your fence line.

SketchUp Free
Trimble
Why this oneFree browser-based 3D modelling with 10 GB of Trimble Connect storage, importing SKP, JPG and PNG and exporting SKP, PNG and STL. The one job it does better than anything else free is showing you whether a level change, a run of steps, a screen or a pergola actually works at eye level — the thing a plan view always lies about. Model the retaining and the roof lines only; do not try to model the planting.
Change this for PerthIt is a sanity-check tool, not the deliverable. The free tier exports SKP, PNG and STL, so there is no route out of it to a printed, dimensioned sheet at a stated scale. It also needs a live connection.

That last part is the use case: two people arguing about where the alfresco goes from different rooms, on the same canvas.
Change this for PerthIt has no concept of scale. Use it for option sketching and for the bubble diagram stage, never for the concept plan itself — a scribble that gets treated as a plan is how gardens end up 600 mm short of a bin store.

Design review in Western Australia
Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage — Office of the Government Architect
Why this oneThis is the state's own model for how design gets judged, and it is the opposite of a reveal. Design review is defined here as independently evaluating design quality against the design principles in State Planning Policy 7.0, by a multi-disciplinary panel — chaired by the Government Architect at state level, or a local government panel — whose stated job is to help proponents explore alternative approaches rather than to score them. Three things transfer straight to your kitchen table: criteria agreed before anyone sees a drawing, reviewers who did not draw it, and advice given against those criteria instead of against taste.
Change this for PerthWritten for major or complex development proposals and built form planning instruments, not backyards. Take the structure and ignore the panel machinery, referral thresholds and fees entirely.

Landscape design process — sketch stage, concept stage, contract
Tim Davies Landscaping
Why this oneA Perth landscaping company publishing what a paid design process actually contains, which is the industry norm you are trying to imitate for free. The sequence is design consultation, then a sketch plan with an estimate of the scope of works, then a concept plan that folds in your feedback and ends in a fixed-price construction contract. The number that matters is buried in the packages: each of their three tiers includes one round of revisions, plus two or three meetings. Not unlimited rounds. One.
Change this for PerthA commercial page from a Perth landscaping business, used here only for its published process — this is not a recommendation, and it is the sort of source this course otherwise avoids. It also states they are not presently taking design-only projects. Design Critiques: Encourage a Positive Culture to Improve Products
Nielsen Norman Group — Sarah Gibbons
Why this oneThe clearest free write-up of the one move this lesson depends on: turning a reaction into a criterion. It sets out the roles (presenter, critics, and a facilitator who circulates the scope and agenda beforehand so nobody is responding cold), and shows how to reformulate a taste comment such as "that layout!" into a question tied to the agreed objectives. Its core rule — feedback is only valid against objectives agreed before the session — is why this lesson makes you read the brief out loud before anyone sees the plan.

Closing the Loop: What to Do After a Design Critique Ends
Nielsen Norman Group — Rachel Krause
Why this oneThe written-response step, which is the part everyone skips and the part that decides whether the sign-off holds. Published May 2026, it gives a recap format — what we are moving forward with, what we are still investigating, what we have decided not to pursue — and insists on attribution, showing changes as "this changed because you said that". Best of all it gives a four-step template for feedback you did not act on: name the feedback, state the decision, give the reason, say what happens next. That template is what stops a rejected comment coming back at you in Phase 8.

Building or renovating your home
Building and Energy, Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety
Why this oneRead this now, at concept stage, to understand exactly what a late change is going to cost you. It covers the Home Building Contracts Act 1991 regime for fixed-cost contracts between $7,500 and $500,000, the 6.5 per cent cap on the deposit a builder can require before starting, the rule that progress payments should only be made for work already done or materials already supplied, and the limited circumstances in which a builder may pass on price increases or claim an extension of time. Every one of those protections assumes you knew what you were buying when you signed.
Change this for PerthThe Act covers home building work; some standalone landscaping and some Class 10 structures sit outside that regime. Do not assume either way — confirm which rules apply to your scope before you sign anything, and work through the contracts lesson in Phase 7 first.
